I backpack alone with a walking stick 2" in diameter and 6 ft tall. I'm fairly certain that predators take this into account when they make their 'fight or flight' decision. Mountain Lions are the main thing to worry about, but in northern climes Grizzly Bears, Wolves and Coyotes are also something to worry about.
